Universal Print Driver for Cloud features

When using the Universal driver provided by Dispatcher Paragon Cloud Client, you can change the default settings of how the documents will be sent to the printer.

What Universal means, and supported queue types

The Universal Print Driver is universal across printer vendors, not across delivery methods. It renders documents in a vendor-neutral format that is translated to the target printer's language during delivery by the desktop client, an embedded terminal, or an Edge gateway. For this reason the driver must always print into a print queue managed by the service. Adding a local TCP/IP printer in the operating system and selecting this driver is not supported: the printer receives untranslated document data and ignores finishing options such as tray, media type, duplex, and copies.

Windows

Configuring print settings

  1. Go to Printers & scanners.

  2. Click one of the printers (print queues) created by the Dispatcher Paragon Cloud client and then click Manage.

  3. Click Printing preferences.

  4. A new dialog window will open. Click Features.

  5. Change the following properties according to your needs:

    • Number Up - the number of document pages per sheet

    • Presentation Order - controls the sequence in which multiple pages per sheet appear

    • Booklet printing - enables booklet-style layout

    • Stapling - adds staples to the printed document (if supported by device)

    • Output Bin - specifies where the paper sits after it finished printing

    • Enable Borderless Pages - disables default 96% page scaling and allows full-page printing with user-defined custom margins

    • Punching - adds hole punches (if supported by device)

    • Page output quality - controls print quality level

    • From version 2.1.1.0 - Paper size dropdown can be used to specify “Custom size”

      • Minimum: 100 mm (~ 3.94″)

      • Maximum: 1188 mm (~ 46.8″)

      • Known issues: Currently, when you set the custom paper size and print using some specific custom values, specifying a different set of custom values won’t apply correctly. You need to swap to a different drop down element and then back to “Custom size” and then you can specify a new set of custom values. We are tracking this issue internally.

  6. Click OK.

Supported input formats

  • Any application which utilizes standard Windows print stack will work, in this case the input format doesn’t matter and we convert everything to PDF

  • SAP - we basically pass-through data coming from SAP, therefore some print features configurable through our driver might be limited

  • Multi-layout document is supported, but is wholly dependent on the source application:

    • Microsoft Word does support it, although there is a small limitation that Letter and A4 paper size combination doesn’t work

    • Adobe Acrobat Reader works with every combination even A4 and Letter (but requires these 2 options enabled)

    • Internet browsers, Windows Notepad, etc. do not support multi-layout documents

  • Per-page paper source (input tray) is not supported

Driver Troubleshooting

The driver supports special configuration through registry keys. Keep in mind the registry keys should be used only in case of an issue. It is not possible to configure those per-queue, the registry key will always apply to all queues.

Settings via the registry keys are applied upon the next print job. No queue recreation or service restart is needed, so e.g., a mass Group Policy is enough to enforce those settings for all users.

Supported registry keys
  • useSingleThread, DWORD … Disables multi-threading, use in case of issues with multi-threading

    • Values: 1 = disabled multi-threading, 0 = default behavior*

  • dpi, DWORD … Sets Print Quality option in driver features. If the registry is configured, the Print Quality cannot be changed and is disabled

    • Values: 0 = No Flattening, 150 = Draft, 300 = Normal, 600 = High, 1200 = Photographic

  • PDFProfile, Multi-string … Changes the PDF profile rendering, should be used only when dpi doesn’t help

    • Values: Preserve = output as close to the input as possible for the output format; Print = a higher quality/larger file size for print purposes; Web = a general purpose PDF output for distributing documents online

  • useFallback, DWORD … Forces the driver to always passthrough the original XPS, without changing anything. Generally only useful for applications like SAP which completely override print ticket management.

    • Values: Values: 1 = always uses fallback, 0 = default behavior*

* default behavior = the driver behaves the same as if the registry key wasn’t specified
